A little about Margaret

Margaret WatsonI’ve made up stories in my head for as long as I can remember – I put myself to sleep at night when I was young by rewriting the plots and endings of books I’d read.  I assumed this was normal and everyone else did the same thing until I began getting weird looks when I talked about it.  It wasn’t until I joined RWA years later that I realized it didn’t mean I was weird – it meant I was a writer.

When I was twelve I  decided I wanted to write books when I grew up, but I got sidetracked by my love of animals and the need for a ‘real’ job, so I became a veterinarian instead.  Eighteen years ago, when I realized I was now making up stories about my clients and their pets, I decided to try putting them down on paper.  My first effort, which I still have in my office, was bad enough to make me squirm when I re-read it now, but I did learn one thing from that first manuscript – that making up stories is what I want to do.

My first book was PERSONAL BEST, published by Meteor Publishing Company in June of 1991 for their Kismet line.  After writing thirteen books for Silhouette Intimate Moments, I’m now writing Harlequin Superromances.  My most recent Superromance, STRANGER IN A SMALL TOWN, was released in December, 2007.  It was the final book in my ‘Small Town’ trilogy.  The first book in my new trilogy about the McInnes triplets, A PLACE CALLED HOME, will be released in August, 2008.  The second book, whose working title is the very imaginative ‘Bree’s story’, will be released in December, 2008.

I consider myself the luckiest person in the world to be involved in two careers that I love.  But more important than either career is my family – my husband and my three daughters.  We live in a Chicago suburb with a menagerie of pets.

What I'm reading now . . .

I had a wonderful Christmas – I hope you all did, too.  But during the holiday rush I didn’t have a lot of time for reading.  Now that the decorations are packed away and all the thank you notes have been written, I can get back to the books stacked dangerously high in my office.

I discovered a new author this fall, and I gobbled up all of her books over the past couple of months.  Tracy Anne Warren’s THE HUSBAND TRAP won RWA’s RITA award last summer for best first book, and it was well-deserved.  It was the first in a series of three books, followed by THE WIFE TRAP and THE WEDDING TRAP.  Tracy has a new series out right now, and it’s even better than her first!  THE ACCIDENTAL MISTRESS, MY FAIR MISTRESS AND HIS FAVORITE MISTRESS are wonderful historicals.  I love getting lost in a different world, and Tracy’s books are perfect for that.

I also caught up on some Robert B. Parker books I’d been saving for a while.  I love all his books, but I particularly enjoy his Sunny Randall series.  SPARE CHANGE is the latest, but all the books in the series are great.  Vince Flynn has a new book, PROTECT AND DEFEND, and I enjoyed reading that, as well.

One of my favorite paranormal authors has a book out now.  THUNDER MOON, by Lori Handeland, is a great addition to her Night Creatures series.  And of course, the incomparable Nora Roberts’ new J.D. Robb book, CREATION IN DEATH, was fabulous.

Susan Mallery has a new book, ACCIDENTALLY YOURS, that I just finished.  It has a wonderful heroine and a story that will make you both laugh and cry.  This is a don’t-miss book.

Tara Janzen has a new series that I’m excited about.  The first book is ON THE LOOSE and the second is CUTTING LOOSE.   Anyone who enjoys romantic suspense will like Janzen.

I've dipped my toe into the ebook experience and for those of you who like spicy stories, THE QUEEN'S TALE by Grace d'Otare was well-written and lots of fun.

I could go on and on, but I’d rather hear about books you’re reading and enjoying.  If you have any book suggestions for me, please email them to me at margaret@margaretwatson.com.   Happy reading!
